Heavy rainfall has battered several districts of Karnataka for the third consecutive day, resulting in a three-year-old girl's death in Belagavi due to a wall collapse. The incident occurred as the state experiences the early influence of the advancing southwest monsoon. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a five-day 'red' alert for coastal Karnataka, warning of extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 20cm in the next 24 hours.

The severe weather conditions have led to reports of landslides, waterlogging, and traffic disruptions in various districts, including Dakshina Kannada and Uttara Kannada. In these districts, incidents of landslips have been reported, and rivers surrounding Belthangady have shown a sharp rise in water levels, raising concerns of flooding in low-lying areas. Several areas in Mangaluru city have been waterlogged due to overflowing drains, with rainfall exceeding 150mm in several parts of the district in the past 24 hours. The highest rainfall was recorded in Bellare, Sullia, with 200.5mm, followed by Sarapady in Bantwal and Belandur in Puttur, both receiving 190mm.

In response to the severe weather conditions, the Dakshina Kannada District Commissioner, Anand K, has declared holidays for all anganwadis, primary and high schools, and PU colleges on May 27 and 28. Similarly, in Chikkamagaluru, the DC, CN Meena Nagaraj, has announced the closure of anganwadis till Wednesday. A woman was seriously injured in Chikkamagaluru's Balur village when a tree fell on her house. Landslides have also disrupted traffic along Shiradi and Charmadi ghats in the Malnad districts of Hassan and Chikkamagaluru.

The IMD's 'red' alert indicates a high level of danger, and residents are advised to take necessary precautions to ensure their safety. The heavy rainfall is expected to continue over the next few days, and the state government has been working to mitigate the effects of the severe weather conditions. As the situation continues to unfold, residents are urged to remain vigilant and follow the instructions of local authorities to minimize the risk of accidents and injuries.
